Waste to Energy

MicroSludge unlocks the renewable energy potential of wastewater sludge, allowing anaerobic digesters to generate more biomethane faster and more efficiently.

At many industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants, waste activated sludge is produced in large quantities and must be disposed of at significant cost. Sludge pre-treatment with MicroSludge enables the conversion of this waste stream into biogas as an economically viable alternative source of energy.

Generating renewable energy from waste meets many social, environmental and government objectives including: energy security, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the cost of wastewater treatment for both industrial and municipal plants.

Waste activated sludge (WAS) is a largely untapped source of renewable energy with a minimal carbon footprint. MicroSludge increases the production of green biogas from WAS that can displace energy produced from fossil sources.

Green biogas energy produced can be used on-site to reduce operating costs or can be sold to electric or gas utilities to provide a sustainable revenue stream.

Without sludge pre-treatment, the full potential of biogas energy cannot be achieved.

Incentives for Green Electricity and Green Biomethane

To encourage diversification of electrical power from the grid towards green energy, many governments offer economic incentives to produce electricity from renewable sources.  This includes co-generation of electricity from biogas.

Green energy incentives vary, but are typically offered on a per kWh basis and may do not require that the generated electricity be fed back to the grid. Consequently, WWTPs that employ anaerobic digestion of sludge to fuel co-generation engines can purchase electricity at the lower grid price and receive substantial green energy credits or feed-in tariffs.

In certain jurisdictions, including British Columbia, “green” biomethane can be sold to natural gas companies or to corporations willing to pay a premium for green biomethane. This displaces non-renewable of natural gas and reduces the carbon footprint.
